Little Movers Dance & Yoga, celebrates the joy of the moving body through imaginative, joyful movement, dances, and games in order to build coordination, awareness, balance, and creative thinking. This class is intended for absolute beginners, so no dance or yoga experience is needed.

This is an excellent class for exercising both the imagination and the body while learning how to move as a group and as individuals.

Who is Little Movers Intended for?

Little Movers is designed for young children who find joy in movement and imagination. Students who are new to or still learning how to participate in a classroom setting will find ample encouragement and a wealth of patience as we warmly invite but do not demand participation in order to provide ample time to acclimate to social interaction and group activities.

Ages: 2.5 – 5.5 years.

Class Structure

Class begins with a brief warm-up, which includes basic yoga poses, to help the students prepare their bodies for the rest of class. This is followed by a variety of dance and imagination-based movement activities to help students develop their "mover's mind" and coordination.

This class meets once a week for forty-five minutes.

Clothing & Attire

Clothing should be comfortable, non-obstructive, and support dynamic movement in all spatial planes.

Yoga mats are available at Robert Crown if needed, but currently the class is run without the use of mats in order to maximize learning time during our short meeting periods.

Shoe requirement: class can be done in soft-soled shoes such as ballet slippers, or in comfortable, non-marking sneakers. Socks can be used, if desired, but given that we use a wood floor for class, alternatives may be necessary if slipperiness becomes an issue for the student and their movement habits.

Accessibility & Inclusivity

We strive to make all our dance classes at Robert Crown Community Center accessible and inclusive. This is both my personal commitment as a professional educator who cares deeply about access and inclusion and is also a part of the City of Evanston's accessibility commitment.

I include sensory check-ins with students to make sure music volume levels are appropriate. One thing to note for this class's age range is that some strong auditory stimuli can occur. Students are encouraged and empowered to take sensory breaks as needed.

The City of Evanston is committed to promoting a city-wide culture of accessibility and inclusivity. To request an accomodation for a program, service, or activity, please call 847-866-2919 to make an ADA service request or fill out a request form online at evanstonil.qscend.com/311.
